Costume:

Completed by: Me

Nicola, Chloe and I will be creating our own Snow White costume which will be similar to the stereotypical Snow White costume.

Chloe will be making and creating the Snow White costume as this is her job, however, if she needs any help with getting equipment etc, I will help.

Here, Chloe found a helpful website which she will follow to help create the costume. http://www.ehow.com/how_10034019_make-home-snow-white-costume-clothes.html

Here is a similar costume which Chloe will create.

Todays lesson - Camera techniques:

Completed by: Me

Today in my Media lesson, we got the opportunity to explore and get an over view of how to work the cameras; we learnt about the settings, focusing techniques, colour and lighting. This helped me understand the key aspects of the camera i will need to use when filming. Firstly, I had to write down my 'shooting checklist' or 'call list', i had to write all the things i need to have prepared in order to make a successful film shot, here is the sheet i complete:

This was very important for me as it made me understand what aspects i need to consider when filming. We will be using this when we start filming to ensure we have the right equipment.

Furthermore, after this, my teacher put up some images of camera angles up on the board and went around the class room, asking individuals what camera angle and mise-en-scene were used, which refreshed my mind for the lesson.

Within the lesson, i learnt about the white balance, and was taught that the colour 'white' is created from all the colours within the rainbow. This allowed me to experiment with a yellow and blue piece of paper, holding them up in front of the camera, changing the settings to create the two pieces of paper to become the colour white. If the piece of paper was yellow, i would adjust the lighting; this meant i added a hint of blue within the compositional frame which created the piece of paper to become white. In addition, i did the same with the blue piece of paper, however, i added a hint of orange to create the piece of paper white. This can be done inside or outside. This was very successful as it allowed me to understand what i need to do while filming to change the lighting if it is low key or high key when not needing to be. As i am having, natural lighting when filming, this will come in very useful.

Another key aspect i learnt within this lesson, was adjusting the manual focus. When the main subject in the compositional frame moves, the camera can tend to go out of focus. This allowed me to experiment with a camera, having an individual in my class to be the main subject, testing the manual focus. This allowed the individual to move and not affect our scene as its still in focus. Moreover, i also learnt about 'depth of field' and discovered that when I'm filming, i need to make sure that its 'deep field' this will allow the audience to be able to see the background as it wont be blurred out, however, another option is that i can create the camera to focus on the main subject and blur out the background. This will make the audience to have their focus on one main subject within the compositional frame and ignore irrelevant backgrounds. In result, this particularly helped me gather my knowledge and comprehend what i need to do to not affect unexpected faults when filming. Although, i did not know how to fix this weakness which occurred when filming the continuity excesses which this has been extremely beneficial and is something I'll certainly use when filming.

In conclusion, this workshop has defiantly been beneficial for me and my group as we have learned certain aspects of filming which we have not thought of beforehand. In result, we are going to be using dark, natural lighting which if needed will be edited on the computers. I feel that this has been very effective and beneficent as it allowed me to gain more knowledge on filming and given me a better understanding of the unique settings i never knew about. In addition, at the end of the lesson i set myself (individually) and within my group.

Film title:

Completed by: Me

Nicola, Chloe and I created our design of a film title which we created on pixlr.com. Our aim was aim was to create a mysterious, yet haunting feel to the title, which instantly grabs attention to the target audience. Here is our film title:

Connotation: Black Background
Denotation: We placed our title on a black background as it created a uncanny, yet haunting appearance. Many people associate black with darkness, evilness, unfairness and sadness. However, within nature, black represents the quintessence of undesirable matter. When first looked at, black instantly indicates to me that the hatred and isolation the film is producing.

Connotation: White writing
Denotation: The white scratch like writing creates a rough, thrilling atmosphere, implying that the main characters incisions have been attacked and wanting to escape by the way the writing is distorted and seemed to be shown as if the individual who has written it is in a rush. The colour white represents, innocence, purity and goodness which creates a contrast on the aggressive black background. This connotes to the audience that within the storyline, there is some virtue within the main character, however, with a dark, enigmatic twist. (Good and Bad side to the character). In addition, the white writing stands out and captures the audiences attention as its creates a contrast with the two harsh colours against each other.

Connotation: Red apple
Denotation: We found a dark red apple which relates to the storyline we have created, however when instantly looking at the title, we would not think that it is related to the film 'Snow White'. Although, the red apple brings a blaze of colour within the title which people would not expect in a opening title, as usually they are plain with no images. The title is 'The Black Apple' however, the apple is red which poses a question on the audience.

How did we create this?

Firstly, we went onto 'pixlr.com'. Once we have clicked into 'create a new image' a box appears to adjust the size of the page we would like to use, which then we altered the sizes to a 400 by width and 360 by height and then click 'okay; which came up with a blank, white page.We created a black background, using the 'Paint Bucket Tool,' then adding a text box with the writing 'The Back Apple' which we instantly knew that we wanted the colour of the writing to be white. We then experimented with various types of fonts, however came across this front, named 'chiller,' which was size '72'.We particularly admired how the writing looks as if its been scratched in. Lastly, we went into 'Google Images' typed in 'Red apple' and uploaded a picture onto 'pixlr', cutting the white background out from the image, which then we used the 'Move Tool' to adjust where we wanted the apple to be placed within the title, we then cropped the image. The title is placed within the centre of the page.

Conclusion:
In conclusion, i particularly admire the title we have created as i find its different to other thriller movie titles which is something we wanted to audience to see, its very effective by the way the writing looks as if its been scratched dastardly into the harsh background, connoting the character is in a dangerous location which is a large aspect we wanted to portray. The way the text slightly covers the apple is creative and is a unique way to portray a large visible feature of our film opening. I do think that this is a success as its not over crowded with ideas and lets the audience question certain aspects of the style of the opening. This is capturing the thrilling, vulnerable atmosphere of the main character which we want the audience to feel.

Ideas for film titles:

Completed by: Me

Here i have created a slide show on prezi.com to show how we have developed our ideas of creating our film title. This has been successful as its allowed me to understand and gives myself a visual image of how i want the film title to be laied out.

Possible dates for filming:

Completed by: Chloe

We will have all the planning work for filming done by either Wednesday 9th November or Friday 11th November so we may be able to film on the following days:

  • Friday 11th November after school - We could film the indoor scene then as it doesn't hinder too much on what the light outside is like and will also be a fairly quick scene to film. A problem would be the actors availability.
  • Saturday 12th November in the afternoon or morning - this is inpropable as we all work on Saturdays and will have to give a weeks notice to get the day off.
  • Sunday 13th November - for me this inpropable as I have work on this day too and won't be able to give enough notice.
  • Wednesday 16th November after school - We could go film after school but it depends on the natural lighting and the weather
  • Friday 18th November - we do not have many lessons that day so we might be able to go to our location on that day and film. A problem could be that transport could be harder as our parents may be at work but we do have alternate means of transport: my sister or public transport.
  • Saturday 19th November - This is more propable because we can give our employers enough notice that we will need to have this day off. We will be able to have the whole day and there is more possibility that our actress will be available because it's not a school day.
  • Sunday 20th November - We have agreed to film for Laura and Emma, other students in our class so this is inpropable unless we do the filming in the morning

As a group we will discuss these dates and finalise the date after we know the storyboard, made sure the actor is available on those dates and made sure we can all make those dates

Prologue - "Voice over"

Completed by: Chloe

The prologue is a voice over that will be non diagetic voice in the background of the scenes. We decided to use this because it adds another layer to the opening scene and applies the enigma code as you wonder why the voice over is needed and what relevance it will have to the film.

Voice over: draft one

"I'd always been a good girl. Never said a bad word, I was always kind...I had never dared to bend the rules, let alone break them. But in every good girl, there is always that alluring temptation to do something reckless. A good girl may wonder what it would be like...to do what you please, and not think about the consequences. I couldn't help my self...and soon enough the good girl in me was non existent and in its place...was a demon with no conscience."

Group thoughts: We liked it as a group as we thought it captured the essence of the film and applied an enigma code as in the dialogue it is not clear what she has done thats bad but we know she has turned bad.
- To improve it: we think that it should be slightly shorter.

Voice over: draft two

"I'd always been a good girl. I had never dared to bend the rules, let alone break them. But in every good girl, there is always that alluring temptation to do something reckless. A good girl may wonder what it would be like to do what you please, and not think about the consequences. I couldn't help my self...and soon enough the good girl in me was non existent and in its place...was a demon with no conscience."

Group thoughts:
- As we have just took out a sentence we still like this newer version

Final voice over:
"I'd always been a good girl. I had never dared to bend the rules, let alone break them. But in every good girl, there is always that alluring temptation to do something reckless. A good girl may wonder what it would be like to do what you please, and not think about the consequences. I couldn't help my self...and soon enough the good girl in me was non existent and in its place...was a demon with no conscience."

Actors:

Completed by: Me

As a group, we have came to a decision and asked an individual to play our main character. Firstly, we asked a individual who does not come to our school, however, we got no response. In addition, we found another individual who is in our school, and agreed to playing the main character.

We will only have 1 character within our opening.

Here is a photo of the individual we want to play the main character (Snow White):

Name: Annie Lock

Age: 17 years old

Acting Experience: Has taken Drama at GCSE and A-Level and has been in various school plays.

Why have we chosen this individual to play the main character? We have chosen this individual to play our main character as we were looking for an individual who has dark hair, pale face, tall, slim and light eyes which fits into the stereotypical image of Snow White, which she has a similar appearance to the character. This individual has done many acting experiences which is a huge advantage, is confident and is someone who we can trust. The image we want to portray within the first 40 seconds of the opening is innocence, which Annie can help demostrate. However, this will dramatically change within the next half of the opening, although, Annie is versatile with acting and will be able to communicate hatred and evilness towards the audience.
